Candidate species are those species for which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has sufficient information to propose for listing as threatened or endangered under the Act. Species of concern (some of which are former Category 1 and Category 2 candidates) are those species whose conservation standing is of concern to the Service, but for which status information is still needed. Protection provided to these species now may preclude possible listing in the future.
