Taxa and character selection. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) used in the analysis were selected as follows:
(i) Inclusion of all 28 OTUs from Ezcurra et al.1: Chanaresuchus, Dimorphodon, Doswellia, Eoraptor, Erythrosuchus, Euparkeria, Fugusuchus, Garjainia triplicostata (=“Vjushkovia triplocostata”), Gracilisuchus, Herrerasaurus, Koilamasuchus, Lagerpeton, Marasuchus, Mesosuchus, Osmolskina, Parasuchus, Prolacerta, Proterosuchus, Qianosuchus, Sarmatosuchus, Saurosuchus, Shansisuchus, Silesaurus, Scleromochlus, Stagonolepis, Terrestrisuchus, Turfanosuchus, Vancleavea;
(ii) inclusion of 16 additional OTUs from Ezcurra et al.2: the basal diapsid Petrolacosaurus as an outgroup; the basal neodiapsid Youngina; the basal rhynchochephalian Gephyrosaurus representing Lepidosauromorpha; and almost all Archosauromorpha used in their analysis (the only exception being Eorasaurus, which was scored separately), namely, Aenigmastropheus, Protorosaurus, Macrocnemus, Tanystropheus, Trilophosaurus, Howesia, Noteosuchus, Archosaurus, Mesosuchus*, Prolacerta*, Euparkeria*, Proterosuchus*, and Erythrosuchus* (*indicates congruent OTUs with Ezcurra et al.1.
These taxa and the new taxon described in this paper, Teyujagua, totalled 40 OTUs. The character list was derived from Ezcurra et al.1,2.Characters were selected for inclusion in the present analysis as follows:
(i) Only morphological characters with character scores that are variable within the selected OTUs were included (i.e. if the same state is scored in the literature for either all or only one selected OTU –independently of whether missing data is present or absent – the character was not included in the present analysis);
(ii) Congruent characters present in two previous analyses were reconsidered, choosing the one with the original description and states, or with modification to the description and/or states;
(iii) Two completely new morphological characters were included.
This resulted in a total of 252 morphological characters.
List of characters used in this study. As described above, the characters used in the current phylogenetic analysis are derived primarily from the character-taxon matrices published by Ezcurra et al.1, 2. These studies themselves represent revised and expanded versions of previously published data sets (see the paper cited above for information on the original formulation of characters).
